Richard H. Gedney was born in New York in 1917. In Rye his family lived at 209 Oakland Beach Ave and were members of the Presbyterian Church. Richard enlisted in 1942 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Gedney Held Prisoner of War Word has been received by Mrs. John Gedney, of 31 Beck Avenue, from the War Department that her son Pvt. Richard Gedney is a prisoner of war in Germany. He was captured in the early righting in North Africa, presumably at Kasserine Pass. Pvt. Gedney was in one of the first American Infantry units to invade North Africa. He enlisted in the Army in June, 1942 and trained at Camp Meade, Md. , and Camp Kilmer, N. Y. , before being sent to England. His mother has not heard from him since January. At Rye High School, Pvt. Gedney had a conspicuous record as a football player and later starred on independent teams. He was employed at R. B. & W. Bolt and Nut Co. before entering the service. Charles Gedney, his brother, is stationed at Fort Bragg RYE, NEW YORK, FRIDAY, MAY 21, 1943

Rihard Horton Gedney Rye painter and decorator and a member of one of the oldest families in Westchester County died Wednesday at United Hospital in Port Chester. Mr Gedney 65 lived at 30 Vale Place Hemes born Feb'13 1917 in Rye to John and May Weeks Gedney.
Mr Gedney was a descendant of the Gedney family that settled in Westchester County in 1097 He wee known affectionately as “Foot" at Rye High School where he starred in football.

During World War n he served In the Army infantry end was a prisoner of war in Germany for 3 1/2 years.

Mr Gedney was a self-employed painter and deco-' rator for many yean He was a volunteer firefighter with the Milton Point Hose Co in Rye for many years He also was active l various sports including softball golf and bowling

Three of his brothers Howard Charles end John are deceased He leaves his wife the former Sarah Abrams of the home address two sons Richard H Jr of White Plains and Rex of State College Pa two daughters Devon Gedney and Allison Gedney both of the home address one brother Robert of Biushan NY three sisters Mary Babbitt of Rye Helen Martin of Seminole Fla and Muriel Gooseth of Rockledge Fla two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
